During the week of November 12, 2025, Hohenfels Elementary School has launched Keyboard Boot Camp, a music education program introducing students in grades 1-5 to piano fundamentals and music literacy.

The school recently added 12 electronic keyboards, creating a piano lab with 24 instruments. The space gives students hands-on opportunities to explore rhythm, melody, harmony and creative expression. The addition marks a significant step toward a more arts-enriched curriculum.

“Music is a universal language and learning to play an instrument like the piano builds confidence, discipline and creativity,” said Dr. James Hannon, the school’s music teacher. “With Keyboard Boot Camp, we’re giving our students the tools to express themselves musically while developing skills that support their academic and personal growth. Now with portable keyboards, pianists pack them up and put them away, so kids don’t have as many opportunities to experiment with them. I want our DoDEA students to have that chance, and they seem to be loving it.”

The structure of the program proves both engaging and accessible.  Students will learn proper hand positioning, note reading and basic music theory through interactive lessons and group practice. The lab setup allows individualized learning while fostering collaboration.

Parents and staff have praised the program for its potential to spark a lifelong love of music. Second graders Jeffrey and Zayden called it “the best day ever.” The school plans to showcase student progress through performances and classroom demonstrations later this year.

With Keyboard Boot Camp in full swing, the future of music education at Hohenfels Elementary looks bright — and harmonious.
